Winnie de Poeh

I really loved the first book and really liked the second. I’ve read the first before. These were in the audible plus library individually with Peter Dennis narrating. This was supposedly the only reading approved by Chistopher Milne. Personally I didn’t really like the narration too much, the oinking of piglet, and the voices just didn’t flow as the ones of the cast BBC dramatization that has Judy Dench and many others, and the Disney film, which I really probably use as a guide as I watched those as a child. Still of the books, I really liked that full cast one. As for Dennis being the only approved narration by C.R. Milne, what would that matter as these book really did damage to his life as his parents did protect him from the fame and later cruelty that they brought. Would someone that disliked the books, not for their content but for their existence be the one you want picking the “best narrator”. Chistopher Milne refused using the proceeds he later acquired for his own benefit but put them in trust for his daughter who suffered from Cerebral Palsy. Later in life he came to terms with the effects of Winnie the Pooh on his life and relationship with his father, not sure about the mother.

Winnie the Pooh is fun and funny, has lessons of life and a great cast of characters with singular personalities. It is a great book to read to children. I would skip the audio unless it is the full cast.

Absolutely delightful!

I recently purchased a beautiful coffee table version of The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh at Costco. It contains the original "Winnie-the-Pooh" and "The House at Pooh Corner" wtih the whimsical full color illustrations by Ernest Shepard.

I grew up watching the animated movies of Winnie the Pooh but never read the books. I'm actually glad I waited to read them as an adult so I could fully appreciate the writing talent in these pages. A A Milne perfectly captures the tone of a loving father bouncing his son on his knee and making up silly stories and songs on the spot. The tales are short and simple but the characters are nuanced and have thoughts and insecurities that, while simplified, are very true to life. And the ending! With very few words Milne was somehow able to create a scene that was both metaphorical and richly emotional.

Such an amazingly whimsical tale of childhood wonder. With endearingly cute characters taking part in various charming adventures it brings the reader back to those days of old where they may have had such similar escapades. Overall, it was a great tale that delights both older and younger audiences alike.

After having this book sit in my room for 15 years, it was about time I read it! Winnie the Pooh will always be a classic.

DID NOT FINISH: 82%

I will finish it when I’ll be back from vacation, I had to return it to the library. It’s a cozy story and if I could, I would leave the book on my nightstand forever.

Started reading this book…wait for it…FOUR YEARS AGO. I finally finished it on a whim, and I guess I’m in the minority when I say I found parts of it—I’m sorry—terribly boring! I can admit that the characters are painfully charming (except Rabbit—can’t stand that guy), and I love the fact that these stories were written for Milne’s very own Christopher Robin in a loving attempt (allegedly) to explain his own PTSD from the war. Coincidentally enough, I only discovered this historical tidbit AFTER attempting to diagnose each of these fascinatingly strange characters. Imagine my surprise after discovering that I wasn’t that far from the (again, alleged) truth. There’s an undeniable beauty about this book, but ultimately I found myself falling asleep on multiple occasions and not really rushing to jump back into it, hence the 3-star review. I could be wrong, but I also imagine that this wouldn’t resonate with young children today—not that it matters, I’m sure the youth of the time cherished it as they should’ve.
