I went into this book blind and I am definitely glad I did. I think it added an extra element of mystery to what was a fairly tense dark romance anyway.
Callan gave me Zade (Haunting Adeline) vibes almost, which tbh I was not mad about. I would say though not as extreme, especially with Zara. If you were considering Haunting Adeline but wanted a stepping stone this could definitely be it.
Callan is your classic morally grey (verging on the darker end) man. He’s big in lots of ways, commits crime yet has good intentions. What ultimately starts out as a short term deal between him and Zara becomes something he wasn’t bargaining for. He was actually really soft with her at times, running her baths and taking care of her. His personality was almost a war of opposites but I loved that clash. Also, he gives her a nickname 😮💨.
Zara was a great match for him. Just feisty enough to keep him guessing which is always fun. I think her recovery from tragedy was well written, and her character was actually quite complex and strong. Great feminist views and not afraid to air them either. The author says in the book that they are two sides of the same coin and honestly I couldn’t have phrased that better myself.
Do I think the writing was the best? No. But in saying that, the story was addictive and I liked the characters, so it was still a good book. I read it in a day, which I don’t usually do unless I am truly enjoying a book, so that bodes well for it, especially as a self published novel. I think this has a lot of potential. I also like that it is standalone which most dark romances aren’t.

Plot was okay. Ending didn’t make much sense. Male lead was a weirdo. Had a double rising action, and turning point that was done kind of choppy. Ending felt forced.
