i would recommend that almost nobody reads this book. maybe i am just a wimp when it comes to horror but i felt like this was so unnecessarily gross and stomach-churning. i do have to say the plot was so well thought out, the characters were very well-rounded, and the writing was incredible. that is why the rating is so high. please please check content warnings!!!!!!!

Summary:
Michael Morrow doesn't belong with the people he calls his family. The ones that lives in a broken down farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, the ones who rely on no one but themselves and the land.

Horrid screams, blood and death dominate the grounds of the Morrow house. The rule is; if you visit the Morrow house, you ain't never leaving. Being raised in this family, you do as you're told. Michael doesn't enjoy any bit of this but to prove he's one of them he must. He follows the rules until one day he meets Alice who works at the record shop in town and he realizes things all to quickly.

Thoughts:
I am at a loss. I struggled for the first half of the book. While it was interesting I truly didn't start getting really into it until I was in the second half. It seemed like it was going to be a typical horrible life and killer situation and it had all the right shocking punches but it really had me hunched, hand on mouth, squirming at just how twisted it all ended up being.

My heart ached for Michael and his two sisters throughout the story. I hated Claudine, Wade and Reb of course (how could you not). Finding out everything as it was happening my jaw dropped, I had my suspicions but I was constantly like there's no way, it can't be.

Oooof this was a good read, only 4 stars because that first half was hard to get through... but it was worth pushing through it.

This was so unrelentingly horrific from start to finish that there was a point where I was going to rate it a solid 3 because it was such a tough read. Like, it's funny to say a horror novel has bad vibes but goddamn did this have bad vibes. But it drove home the violent dullness of true serial murder and stuck the landing so hard that now I'm not sure it wasn't brilliant! But I can't decide, so no rating. But now I need a long shower.

Gory and depressing, but still pretty good. Just not the type of book you’ll want to read if you’re looking for something lighthearted.
