MY THOUGHTS
  • This book was torture porn, and not a good book.
  • The twists are predictable, none of the characters are likable, and the pacing is slow. Not a single redeemable character in the book. Ending was not satisfied.
  • I am not usually bothered by reading “dark” books, but this book simply added disturbing content for no reason. The author does 0 character development, and fails to flush out a single motivation for doing anything. As far as I could tell, the violence was added as a way to cover up the lack of plot and story.
  • There’s 0 backstory for how this family came to be this way…?!
  • The writing is not good.
  • The book is soooo drawn out & repetitive. As mentioned, there’s no back story explored, so the book is literally just pages & pages of repetition.
  • By the end of the book, you’re screaming at the pages at the main character, “ENOUGH ALREADY OMGGGG”
  • My two stars may even be too generous here.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️2 stars. Yikes. Disappointing. Read trigger warnings I included, as this is torture porn with no attempt to be a real story.

As a West Virginian, this is a story that has been told way too many times for it to be done in a nuanced way. This was a rehashing of so many stereotypes written by someone who has obviously not done their research on Appalachia. These ideas about people from Appalachia, and in particular West Virginia, still harm the people there today. There was no reason this couldn’t have taken place in any other “middle of nowhere”. It’s just overdone, and while this was billed as “horrific” the scariest part was the over-abundance of played-out tropes and uninspired writing. I beg people to stop with the incest hillbilly cannibals.

I could be willing to even look past all of that if the story wasn’t so boring and predictable. Completely disappointed by this and the horror is mediocre at best.
