The Heart of Betrayal is a more than worthy sequel to A Kiss of Deception. However, although it picks up right after events from the first novel, there are some major differences between the two. The world building is more advanced, and the novel shifts more to military strategy than romance. Lia’s character’s has progressed as well, into a strong, confident protagonist. It does fall into some lulls, common in most second novel fantasy’s, but I am excited to pick up the last book.

I think I liked this book better than the first. It was interesting to see our three main characters together in Venda and navigating all the court intrigue and deception. The love triangle between Lia, Kaden, and Rafe is the most interesting I think I’ve ever read and I can’t wait to see how their relationships develop in the last book.

I wish I had loved this one as much as the first but
I found it so hard to believe that the Komizar kept her alive! They talk so much about the violence and brutality of him and his government but they let her repeatedly push buttons with just threats and minor acts of violence. Given the lack of mercy they describe it just messed with the immersion of the book that they let her get away with so much without ever trying to kill her.

I also feel like the fact that there’s so much distance between the love interests was less appealing to me. But I still really enjoyed the book!
