The book is advertised as a biography of the father of Alexandre Dumas, but it is equally about race relations in France during the French Revolution. And I found it all quite interesting. Though I have to say, if you're a big Napoleon fan, this book is not for you. He does not come out as a wonderful person in this book.
Loved this real-life account of an historical period with which I'm not too familiar. It was rich, engaging and detailed without reading like a text book.
Had to return it to the library before I could renew.
Wow, what a great read. I didn't know that Alexandre Dumas had a father who is, in so many ways, Edmond Dantes. He led an extraordinary life, and more extraordinarily, seems to have been completely forgotten. This book was a great companion to The Count of Monte Cristo and The Hemingses of Monticello, given how it dealt with France's revolution and its progressive approach to slavery and race. I also got several more morsels on how Napoleon is a total shit bird, which was great. Immersing myself in revolutionary France, their evolution on race and slavery, Napoleon, and the remarkable life that the elder Dumas led, was a real joy.

More military history than I would prefer but really interesting account of Dumas and his historical context
