A super insightful and important coming-of-age novel that presents an intimate and diverse experience(s) of deafness within the walls of an imaginary school for the deaf in southern Ohio. For those of us who have only ever been part of the hearing world, the novel provides a multitude of nuances of what being deaf has meant in North America then, now - and how the community risks further erosion in the future due to new technologies and unequal power relations between the hearing and deaf worlds. A nice read for anyone craving a coming-of-age teenage story with a twist of anarchy and who wants to learn something new.

Also: make sure to read this in a print format! The book includes many wonderful illustrations of ASL that you can practice and learn from as you read. I imagine this works for a much better reading experience in a print than audio book format.

(NB: I chose this book originally as part of the 2023 StoryGraph genre challenge to read a novel with disability rep - though, as it is also apparent from the book, deafness may or may not be a disability depending on the deaf individual you ask and their own lived experience. For now, though, given the thorough injustices experienced by deaf children and adults alike in societies still structured around the presumption of hearing, I believe this novel still qualifies as a relevant selection for the challenge)

Loved this book. A perfect mix of plot, character development and education. I loved the perspective switching, the incorporation of ASL and Deaf culture and Deaf slang. It was a perfect supplemental book to my ASL class, but it would be great standalone read as well because it is so compelling. Definitely more of a young adult book, but in a good way.

As the daughter of an ASL speaker, this book really resonated with me. I was pleasantly surprised by all the cultural and linguistic information scattered through the book, and the story itself was surprisingly compelling - especially given that I don’t generally enjoy teenage/YA books. Although the traumatic parts were hard to read, they were hard because I know they were based on reality. Everything else was really enjoyable to read and learn from, and I’m glad I left my usual world of sci-fi and spec fic to give this one a try.

What a killer, heartfelt story! I loved the use of the chapter bumpers as diegetic one-pagers on Deaf culture, ASL, and Wikipedia articles. The ending and how it resolved formative conflicts in the three protagonists’ lives was so satisfying to experience. I loved that it served as a testament to direct action, while showing that the tradeoffs in taking such action are hard to ignore when multiple parties’ livelihoods are at stake.

This novel truly feels like a love letter to the Deaf community and disabled activists. The author does a wonderful job of incorporating different archetypes of Deaf experience that dispel any thoughts of monolith from Deaf ideologies. After reading this, I am more curious about other intersectional identities that were not covered related to race, gender, religion, and other disability.

The formatting of dialogue and illustrative chapter titles speak to the spirit of the term “deaf gain” as opposed to “hearing loss”—these visual and spatial tidbits enhance Nović’s strong artistic voice. Highly recommend to anyone seeking an earnest and important coming-of-age story.

Nigh perfect. Absolutely fascinating audiobook, too - the author recorded the sounds the signs make, and the sound plays as the dialog is read, to indicate a character is signing. I'm definitely going to need to check out a print copy, too.

I picked this up at the recommendation of Deaf, deaf, and hearing friends, but the Deaf endorsement meant the most to me. I'm pretty savvy to a lot of the history, but I learned a lot from this book. I appreciated the diversity within the school, and the diversity of perspectives presented. It didn't shy away from depicting difficult situations and complex dynamics.

An important contribution to the canon. Now can we get more Deaf books?
