The Whistleblower - Robert Peston
It's a long time since I've read a political thriller which I enjoyed as much as this.
Gil is a political reporter who is convinced that his sister was murdered and not just knocked off her bicycle. He has his own demons to overcome. He battles the political hierarchy and the powerful business moguls in order to discover the truth. This book had me riveted feom beginning to end. I will ceetainly be reading more by Robert Peston.

Of course Robert Peston is a name and face we all know, I have an interest in politics and meaning I was very excited to receive an advance copy of this book.
Right from the very beginning the book grabbed my attention and managed to keep up the pace and anticipation all the way through. Even when you think you’ve worked out what’s going on, there’s another twist or surprise pop up to keep you guessing.
We follow Gil Peck, a broadsheet tabloid politic editor in the run up to a general election. As the book begins he received a call to say his estranged sister has been in an accident. When she dies Gil becomes embroiled in trying to prove it wasn’t an accident, but who could have engineered Claire’s death and what possible motives could they have. Gil is great as a character, he has an enquiring mind, likes a bit on the dark side and has complicated relationships.

This book isn’t my usual genre however I was drawn to up because Robert Peston wrote it. The cover also drew me to it.
Gil Peck is a political journalist, he has always looked up to his sister who is a civil servant in the treasury, although they have become estranged. When Clare is killed while cycling Gil soon discovers that he death may not have been accidental but to cover up a scandal.
I found the first half of the book quite slow, a lot of time was spent setting the scene. I am pleased that I persevered as the first half set the scene well for the Rest of the book. The detail was good and I felt that I was being drawn into the murky world of politics. The Whistleblower explored how the press can make or break a government and how large conglomerates are heavily involved.
I was pleased that Gil developed more as a character and the relationship between him and the other characters became more real. I felt very involved in the hunt for Clare’s killer as the book became more fast paced. It had a good strong ending with all of the ends tied up.

This was a fantastic read.
It was a gripping story, with plenty of twists and turns. It was really well written from the plot to the characters.
I loved our main protagonist Gil, who despite his faults/quirks was a very likeable character. I also loved that we got insight into both his personal and professional lives.
I enjoyed the partnership between him and Jess and I definitely look forward to reading more of this partnership!
If you don't mind a political thriller, then I highly recommend this to you!
Thank you to PH and Robert for the chance to read this book.

I think the great strength of this thriller was the main character, who I thought was very true to life. I loved how the author portrayed him and his family relationships after the death of his sister, and I thought the book had a really strong plot too, going right to the heart of the establishment. The way Peston portrayed the thinly disguised Labour politicians of the 90s was entertaining too.
I read and advanced review copy on Pigeonhole and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed this book and didn't realise that it was possible to write such an exciting thriller based around the world of politics. In this book, Gil Peck is distraught as he discovers that his sister has been knocked off her bike. However, after speaking to his sister's colleague, Gil starts to think that this may be something more sinister than an accident.
This was a well written book, medium paced book, and you can see Robert Peston's expertise in the world of politics shine through in the details. Throughout the book I always felt that I was kept on my toes and wondering what would come next. The political and thriller elements were well woven to create a well balanced and believable story, that also makes you think about the secrets of the political world. There were constant twists and turns, and I thought the book introduced new information at a good pace.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to others wanting a thriller with an element of political intrigue.

Perfect holiday reading, a gripping political thriller full of dark deeds, devilish doings and flawed characters. To say this is history re-writ and full of “thinly disguised characters” (I bet Peston would like £1 for every time a reviewer says this about his first novel!) is an understatement. All that said, first novel, flaws and all, this kept my attention well and I enjoyed going back to 1st May 1997, when the country rode on a tide of faith in new leadership, before it ultimately crashed out on spin, cynicism and disappointment. If you enjoyed House of Cards, you’ll appreciate this.
It's a gripping and interesting political thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed.
I had the impression that author wrote this story basing on his personal experiences.
The plot flows even if drags at time, good character development.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This was outside of my normal genre but I thought it would be good to read something different. I am glad I did. This was very well researched, not surprising given who the author is, and the plot worked well.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
