If grim-dark fantasy is your thing then treat this review as five instead of three stars as the author really achieved what he set out to do in this book. I didn't particularly enjoy this book myself as the main character was just the worst and not in a fun way. Being in Edrin's head is genuinely unpleasant and none of the side characters were particularly likeable either. There is also much time set aside on descriptions of just how much sewage is on the street and things of such nature which is fine I guess but gets a bit depressing after a while.

However the author really knows how to write a gripping plot and while I may not have particularly enjoyed much of the ride I found I couldn't stop! Some of the directions he took the story were very interesting and original. I will also mention it had strong Bloodborne vibes.

This book wasn't perfect; descriptions felt rushed or inaccurate at times. But I still couldn't put the damn thing down.

This was an impressive amount of world building. International conflicts, interdimensional realms, interpersonal history and a magic system all in 400-ish pages.

And still it was entertaining and the MC was gritty AF in a way that I found mostly believable or explainable.

Very excited to try the next book in this series.
