I finished the book a couple weeks ago and it has stuck with me. Having read and enjoyed the kingsbridge series, this was a no-brainer. It follows the same formula as the rest, but I absolutely love that formula! Early medieval Europe, church construction, improbable love stories, brutal losses, hard fought struggles, good and evil characters that read like real, but simplified people. It checks all the boxes for the series.
Although a big book, it never got boring and was somehow a quick read.
It has left me with a longing for revisit these characters soon.
Also, Vikings raids were not cool.

This is essentially a long “beach read.” Not too much thought required, but the good guys win in the end.
Did not plan to read this and then it swept me away. I found this a very engaging mix of history, romance, drama, and commentary on British history as they engaged with Normans and Vikings. Covers many years and many characters, but at the core we follow Edgar the Builder, Lady Ragna, and Father Alfred. Their stories are interesting, exciting and dangerous at times, with smooth transitions back and forth. Five stars! Long read but who cares!
It's been awhile since I read The Pillars of the Earth, actually the trilogy and I was intrigued to read the fourth and fifth books. This book is listed as book four and sometimes book zero so it took me a minute to realize that this is pre Pillars of the Earth so I am behind the time. I must say it did not hold my attention as the first three books in the series had and was not as enjoyable. For such a lengthy book I just needed some battle scenes or something to add to the excitement of the time period.
I read this 900+ page book in two days, I couldn't put it down.
In this book we see the beginnings of Kingsbridge, back when it was known as Dregn's Ferry and the famous Kingsbridge Priory is nothing more than a minister house.

Featured child slavery/rape. I could not keep reading.
After sitting on this for a while, I Had to adjust my original 5 star rating. I love Ken Follett's writing style, but his Kingsbridge books are beginning to feel a bit formulaic. These are essentially the same characters from Pillars of the Earth, playing out essentially the same story with only slight variations.
This was still an enjoyable read, but at the end of the day, it didn't deliver anything new.
