Uneven, and a little bit too formulaic in its approach - but a better addition to the series than a column of fire. Should Follett decide to write another prequel, I would read it.
It's essentially the same storyline as each one of the series of 'Pillars of the Earth' books, but I just keep going back for more. The charm of Follet's fascination with Cathedrals, which I love about the other books in the series, isn't as prevalent in this one. Additionally, I think that the "intimate scenes" from a woman's perspective are clearly written by a man. Despite this, I enjoyed it.
The origin story for the town of Kingsbridge in "Pillars of the Earth." If you weren't enthralled by previous works in the Kingsbridge series, probably best to skip. It made me want to read the series again.

Oh my gosh. So good. If you loved Pillars of the Earth, I think you will love this prequel. It's a juicy read, and is such a great set up for Pillars. A cozy, weighted blanket of a book!
Cel mai bun volum din seria Kingsbridge. Ken Follet este un magician ! Felicitari !
It kept me reading to the end although at first it seemed to drag.
Very entertaining story - loved the characters and twists and turns of fate as they built early England in the turn of the 1st century. Would make a great movie or limited series!
Great read!
Ken Follett is a master storyteller! I didn’t want to put this one down & now I’m preparing to reread the rest of the Kings Bridge series.
