this book was, while on an important subject matter, functionally an extended wikipedia article. i think it’s important that it focused on such an “everywoman” but i feel like the author took this too far in a sense. there was nothing significant about the story, as a woman everything she was going through felt very familiar. i’m glad the book was successful in korea and shedded light on the experiences of women in such a patriarchal society, but i was just really meh about it tbh. and the inclusion of her potential disassociative (? spelling) disorder at the beginning and end felt? unneccessary? and not very well fleshed out. also really did not enjoy the psychiatrists weird monologue at the end. it’s definitely a good book if you know nothing about the experiences of women under the patriarchy? but in this day and age? you’d really have to have been living under a rock. 3.25 at a push i’m afraid :(

A 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars read for me, despite feeling like some of the book got lost in translation, because it was interesting, a fairly quick read, and well-paced. I think it was partially the headspace I was in when I read it that made me enjoy it so much, but I can definitely say that I liked the book well enough and the reading experience overall.

i’m not going to say i didn’t like this book, because i did, but it was a different sort of like. i definitely expected to like it more than i did because of how hyped it was, but regardless i did find that the book provided interesting insight into topics and issues that i was not previously educated on.

one of the blurbs for kim jiyoung, born 1982 proclaims it as “a ground-breaking work of feminist fiction” and i think that is dead on. this books main overarching narrative is the treatment of women vs. men in korean society. how women came in second place every time, no matter what. boys were preferred so strongly that women would abort their babies when they found out the gender was girl.

that sexism and misogyny carries into the adult lives of these women as they struggle in the workplace and their everyday lives.

this was not an action packed book, but it was knowledges packed. i feel like i learned a lot, which i feel like is all you can ask for.
