Enjoyed the first book but this one didn’t grab me and then it stayed that way.

Book 1 - the Queen is known to limit Amari's food and seems to value thinness and beauty over anything else.
Book 2 - you thought Queen Elara Merandus is the worst queen mother ever? Queen Nehanda is here to be the MOST genocidal, brutal, and hateful queen mother I've ever read.
I didn't enjoy book 2 as much, but also what do you expect of traumatized teenagers forced to fight a war? There's so much brutality and bad decisions, but I also get that Adeyemi is making commentary about the cycle of war and violence. But I don't think there's anyway to truth and reconciliation their way out of this.
TLDR - fuck Inan and his mama

Wildly slow start, but once it picked up it PICKED UP. And some of it is going to look so cool once adapted (if done even a little well). I'm more excited for book 3 than I was for book 2 after that ending, which is saying something for a debut YA author's sophomore book. All my heart to Chris who reads out loud, explains what happened when my mind can't focus, and keeps books like this in my life.
