Let's start with the things Maas does exceptionally well. Once again we are provided with a kick ass main female protagonist. Feyre is my ultimate favorite female literary character in the past, but the fact that the introduction of Bryce has me questioning if that's still the case rattles my bones. I definitely personally relate to Bryce much more than Feyre, and reading her dialogue was like hearing from a familiar friend.⁣
⁣
If you're expecting the same level of fantasy as previously introduced into ACOTAR, change your expectation now. Crescent City gives Maas a platform to the high fantasy genre, and she shines. While there were a lot of moving pieces, I never thought anything was half assed or vague for just casual filler. Everything was intentional and meaningful, which is not always the case with high fantasy reads.⁣
⁣
But guys...this lacked the spice. No, not THAT spice, there were certainly steamy moments. I just missed whatever it is everyone else is talking about. Is it because I'm letting ACOTAR set my expectations too high? Maybe. If I had never read ACOTAR, I probably wouldn't have this feeling in my stomach. Yet to put it concisely, there are two major problems I can't reconcile at the moment.⁣
⁣
One being that this book is far too long for the plot. For more than a third of the book, I was constantly questioning what the hype was about. The last 80% had me flipping pages like crazy, but...I'm left with the feeling it was not worth the 500+ pages leading up to it.⁣
⁣
The second and final issue that really put the nail in the coffin for me is Hunt. He has his moments, yes but...wow, he was pretty bland. I know, I know, he's a tortured soul, weight of his actions on his shoulders, yeah, yeah, yeah. I just didn't see the chemistry between him and Bryce, it just didn't click for me. They're vulnerable and sweet with each other, sure, but...I don't know man, I'm just not buying it.⁣
⁣
I'll go hide under a rock in the corner of bookstagram so Hunt's groupies don't kill me.

It took a while for me to really get into the book. It was a slow start, and a lot of information is thrown at you in the first few chapters, so it made it difficult to process at first. But there are a ton of twists and turns that I never saw coming. I was on the edge of my seat by the end.
