This book is one of my favorite of the year so far. I was drawn in immediately. It's messy and complicated. It's political and personal. It's history and the present. It's greed and power and love and family, community, and revolution. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.

A complicated story about a complicated, successful woman with a tough relationship with her revolutionary, absent mother. Sometimes, though, everything turns out for the best and I was here for it.
Gave it a 4 when I finished it this morning, but after thinking about it all day I moved it down to a 3.5 (3 ⭐️). I wanted it to be a 4 because I loved several things about it, but I just don’t think it deserves 4 stars overall. I’m still glad I read it, and I learned a lot about Borinquen (Puerto Rico) and the diaspora in the US. I don’t think the audio book I listened to was very good, and that added to my sentiment that even though the content was very adult realistic fiction, it often read like a YA novel.
Woo! It is almost 1am and I finished this read. I’ve had this on my TBR for almost a year now and I’m so glad I read it. I absolutely love the writing of this author, but it lost one point because there were points that I felt were dry and I just kind of skimmed over. An overall great read though!

I found some plot lines a little convenient and spent most of the book super anxious about things that never happened, but I did really enjoy it!! A good read.
