Finally a book to get me out of my slump!

This book was a treat. I found the characters to be really well developed and nuanced, with interesting arcs for multiple people and also reasonable and believable flaws and issues.

I felt the story really opened up like a rose, with new information being revealed just in time to appreciate the bigger picture and to add understanding and meaning to everything happening. The struggles and exploitation of Puerto Rico are of course at the heart of this novel, which I was very interested and disheartened to learn more about, but so many other interesting themes arose alongside this main point. The strengths of family and the powerful hurt that can come when family fails you, the importance of integrity (to yourself and to others), the everyday grief of living with secrets and the liberating effects of being able to speak things out and forge connections instead of falling into isolation, and also so much about power and liberation and the infinite ways humans are flawed and weak and make complicated choices regarding these things. I just thought it was truly very well woven together and I appreciate the elegance with which González told this story. Satisfying in all the ways I want books to be.

All in all a great read!
