Pandemonium

3.85 AVERAGE

Gripping, suspenseful, and darker than first one this was really good. Whereas Delirium felt slower and more dramatic, Pandemonium is action packed page turner. With more rebelling, and suspense this novel has become truly a dark dystopian. The ending was a big cliffhanger I didn't see coming (no spoilers here!) However you should be wary reading this book after the first one the tone is much darker. Overall enjoyed it and recommend to anyone who read the first one whether or not they liked the first one

So, so, so much better than Delirium! I really enjoyed it. The only thing that bugged me was those chapter sizes. They were so incoherent, it really threw me off.

I can't believe I have to wait until 2013 for the next one :-/

I think Lauren Oliver did a very good job writing the Character of Julian since I thought that I was going to hate him. Instead I found myself feeling conflicted after Alex came back on the very last page. I do however feel that Julian’s decision to run away with Lena and their Romance was a bit rushed. I felt Alex should have also come back like one chapter earlier. Otherwise this book was amazing and I couldn’t set it down, a real page turner!

I seriously love this book!!:)

And she does it again! I love this series and this book is no exception. Love is written about so gently and beautifully throughout the story. Lena has been grown and shaped in countless ways, but she never gives up on love.

Dystopians are supposed to be a warning, keep heading on this path and this is the society, you will create…do you like what you see, do you want it?

And Ive been wondering,so, what’s Oliver trying to warn us about?
And then it hits me….science. And that leaves such a bitter taste in my mouth. A world built on fact and indifference, wouldn’t believe in, nor need a heaven. Why would they need the threat of eternal damnation to be good. The cure is supposed to rid them of all that causes evil. (Although we know this isn't true) we have no explanation why the government has became a cult. And it's just not ok to demonise science. There's enough religious people who fear science, we don't need to fuel more doubt.

I dislike the use of then & now chapters, there was no need or benefit to this and it was disorientating.
Also are we supposed to believe that Lena has found true love
Spoiler.after being stuck in a kidnapping scenario with a guy She's just met? I don't buy it. This is far too forced, just to tell a story of, you guessed it, A love triangle. Groans.

I just finished this book yesterday! Ohmygosh. it was freaking CRAY. as in a good way. The end woaaah. just read the series and this book if you haven't yet, it's better than the hunger games in some ways to me...a great dystopian novel.
adventurous dark inspiring mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

This is the sequel to 'Delirium' so if you haven't read 'Delirium' and you plan to I wouldn't read on past here. This review doesn't have spoilers from 'Pandemonium' though.

A Spoiler Free Bit About the Book

After escaping Portland, Lena must live in the Wilds and learn fast how to make a life there. But how can she do that without the reason she escaped in the first place? How can she do that without Alex?

My Review

If you've read my review of 'Delirium' you'll know just how much I adored it, the whole idea that love was a disease was fascinating. But 'Pandemonium' wasn't about that. It was about a group who didn't believe in the disease or the cure and who wanted to fight for love.

'Pandemonium' was such a disappointment as I loved 'Delirium' so much.

In comparison, 'Pandemonium' felt very slow. I didn't know where it was going but I wasn't hooked so I had to make myself read it, which is never a good thing. Also, as it went on I found that I didn't like where it was going anyway.

But it wasn't all bad. I liked the separation between 'Now' and 'Then' and the way that shaped the story with the back and forth between them. I liked learning about how they lived in the Wilds and how different it was there. Also, little things surprised me and as in 'Delirium', Oliver included some beautiful phrases.

The new characters were great. I connected with them and wanted to know more about them but that didn't mean they could compare to the characters we left behind in 'Delirium'. I spent a lot of 'Pandemonium' pining for the old characters as much as Lena was. Or perhaps that was the point.

The twist at the end in my opinion, was so predictable. I knew it was coming through most of the book. I don't think that's a negative on Oliver's part as it wasn't hinted at too much or anything. It was just one of those things that had to happen and I was very aware of that.

Evaluation

Plot - 6/10 - The plot wasn't really gripping enough for my liking.

Way Plot Was Pursued - 7/10 - I liked the 'Then' and 'Now'.

Characters - 7/10 - Not as loveable as the characters in 'Delirium'.

Style - 7/10 - Oliver's style is beautiful but I wanted more action.

Plot - 6/10 - It started slow and seemed slow most of the way through. I expected something to speed it up and it didn't.

Would I recommend it? - No. To feel the real power behind 'Delirium' it's probably best not to read 'Pandemonium' if like me you need a faster pace and more urgency in a novel.

Would I look up the author? - Yes. I'm still interested in Oliver's 'Before I Fall' and look forward to reading it at some point.

'Pandemonium' was okay. I doubted anything could top 'Delirium' anyway.
