I saw this book while browsing the Children’s/Young Adult section in Indigo. The cover just grabbed my attn and as a lover of the Kite Runner, I made a mental note to read it (eventually)
I came across the whole series at the library and took the opportunity to read it! So glad I did! It really illustrates life, especially for women, and the men that love them, within a a war forced upon them.
For the children who have to take extreme measures for the survival of their family. It almost seems unreal.
A small glimpse of what life in a war torn Afghanistan is like for those who still remember the country they love enough not to abandon it even when faced with the very worst!
It was a good read I’m glad I got around to it! Looking forward to the rest of the series

Thanks to an amazing 13 year-old for recommending this. Already thinking of ways to use this with my students.

This book is about a young girl in Afghanistan who dresses up as a bacha posh, or boy, after her father is taken by the Taliban. The book also talks about the horrors of living as a woman under the oppressive Taliban regime.
I really liked this book -- it was easy to care about Parvana, the main character, and her family. It was also pretty shocking to hear about the Taliban and that women couldn't even go outside without a burqa for fear of being arrested or beaten up. I recommend this book to students who care about real issues going on around the world.
