I’m bingeing on Agatha Christie books on Storytel! This one was narrated by David Suchet who is of course Poirot incarnate 😊 This is a re-read although I’ve re-read it less frequently than I have others.

Poirot is on vacation when the stunning but vacuous Arlena Stewart is found strangled on a secluded beach close to the resort. Poirot must try to find the murderer from amongst a closed circle of quirky characters, all staying at the resort and including Arlena’s husband and step-daughter. I’d forgotten how intriguingly well plotted this one was and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting it! The solution is clever and the villain cunningly evil! Poirot Faces quite the challenge in administering justice and I enjoyed the drama of the reveal more than usual 😊

I enjoyed this one more than I expected to. Highly Recommended!

I don’t know how I could like Poirot less than Sherlock Holmes in my teenage years: he is absolutely delightful!

I enrage myself with an imbecile. I say, ‘I would like to kick him.’ Instead I kick the table. I say, ‘This table, it is the imbecile, I kick him so.’ And then, if I have not hurt my toe too much, I feel much better and the table it is not usually damaged.”

In this Hercule Poirot mystery, our little Belgian detective is on holiday at an out-of-the-way seaside hotel. A beautiful young woman, Arlena Marshall, is found murdered on a secluded beach.

This book demonstrates all of Christie's considerable skill. The characters are carefully crafted, life-like and memorable, the plot is thick and ingenious, and the solution fits perfectly.

In the end, the murderer is
Spoiler Patrick Redfern, the man who was supposedly having his head turned by young Mrs. Marshall. In actual fact, he was the one turning her head, quite literally, since he strangled her. His alibi accounted for all his time until he found the body together with another witness. His wife had been posing as the dead body. After the witness left to inform the police, Mrs. Redfern leaves and Mr. Redfern strangles Mrs. Marshall.
