The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Tim Conrad

There wasn't much to this story, only 48 pages, so it was a quick read. Most of the text was in the form narration bubbles over images that were not particularly dynamic or had little action. As a result, this graphic novel seemed a lot like a series of images with captions. And unfortunately, I didn't love the style of the artwork either. The characters looked like different people from one frame to the next in many cases--sometimes they were nice to look at and, sometimes, not so much.

Well now, this was a waste of time. My advice would be to avoid this one unless you’re a huge fan of the original Hunchback of Notre Dame book. The illustrations are horrible; the style is very strange and unaesthetic. There are no facial expressions, the anatomy is messed up, most of the scenes are lacking composition.

I also could not focus on the story because the page resolution was too low causing the text to be unreadable. I simply could not finish it.

The Hunchback of Nortre Dame happens to be one of my favorite classics and coming upon the graphic novel through Netgalley, I knew I had to read it. Unfortunately, I was dissatisfied with the quality and the quantity of the graphic novel.

The artwork is very poor and doesn't do the story justice. The characters failed to meet the representations that were cast upon them in the book. The only one who lived up to expectations was Quasimodo--the grotesque bell ringer of Nortre Dame. The malformed artwork did his character wonders.

There was no connections what-so-ever towards the characters, they came and went like the wind. I watched them live or die like I would the grass grow. The bland nature of the characters and the dialogue failed to captivate me and feel the sorrow and pain and pity that I should have for the characters. The only thing I found myself doing was cringe towards the artwork. The scenes with Esmeralda made me so upset. She is suppose to be a beautiful gypsy. She looked nothing in comparison to beautiful.

I am just so disappointed in how bad this was.

I'm not sure what to say about this graphic novel. The art was pretty bad and the story in overall was mediocre at best.

I enjoy graphic novels and I’ve only read one other that was a visual retelling of a classic novel, so I was quite eager to read this one. However I find myself a bit disappointed in it and it leaves me rather upset because I had really hoped to truly enjoy this one.

It is quite a short graphic novel coming in at barely 50 pages so the story progresses rather fast and without hesitation of any sort. I think the biggest let down for me was the fact that it is literally just a retelling and nothing more was truly added. The story is told in narration boxes that do little for the actual graphic novel, and instead of pulling you into the story it makes it seem more like a bunch of pictures with a caption. I suppose I wanted it to be more immersive in the narration aspect instead of just a “this is what happened” viewpoint. The artwork also had me somewhat unsure of how I felt about it. While the tone of the art is certainly matching that of the story’s somber tone they were not very consistent in their portrayals. There were times when the character’s faces looked completely different from one frame to the next, and it really threw me for a loop. The hunchback stayed the same but Esmeralda changed quite a bit. Some of the art was quite nice but only a few squares away it would become rather off and it would loose me again.

It’s certainly not a bad graphic novel however I think I was expecting more and ended up being quite let down. I think those who enjoyed the original story and are looking for a straightforward visual companion might enjoy this.

I received this from Dark Horse and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
