9/10: A gruesome revenge story taking place in the First Law world. There is no one good, just different hues of evil.

Vengeance, then

As stated in some reviews of previous books I’ve read, when it comes to revenge stories, I either want the main character to fail and die or I want to wrap them up in blankets and give them endless cuddles. Monzcarro Murcatto, the Serpent of Talins, the Butcher of Caprile, who seeks revenge for her loved one’s murder…falls into neither. Why? I couldn’t bring myself to care.

While we do get flashbacks as to why we should care about Monza’s revenge, I feel like it wasn’t enough. And as the story progressed and each assassination plan completely derailed leading to more casualties than necessary, my indifference became annoyance. I didn’t care about Monza, I didn’t care about her brother (the flashbacks made me hate him), I didn’t care about her revenge and because I didn’t care, everything felt unnecessary. All the collateral casualties for this? I was basically reading for Shivers (I can see why people say this is where his story truly begins) and Friendly (I officially need more autistic warriors)

I also may have teared up when the High King of the Union appeared.

Abercrombie does what he does best. Memorable, morally grey characters fighting other memorable, morally grey characters. The back-stabbiest book I've ever read.
