YA with aged up protagonists. Which is to say that the concept was interesting but motivations and magnitude felt flat and disappointing. There was frequently a lot of description that felt unnecessary or insignificant to the plot. It wasn't bad, but I wanted more from itNot more story, though. How is this supposed to be a trilogy?!

Green Bone Saga (Fonda) and War Arts (Chu) are both better picks in this arena.

Not my favorite. Too many character POV’s and I didn’t enjoy them changing bodies so much.

I liked how many times this book surprised me. It took me a second to get into it and there were times I wanted to shake Calla. But overall, this was a fun read! Like an adult Hunger Games meets secret cults meets uprooting the monarchy?

I know nothing of the story this is a retelling of, and I think that’s a good thing because I don’t usually like retellings.

I liked this quite a bit! I think I wish that at the end we had gotten just a pinch more, even just like a kiss or an embrace or something that really cemented it for me that everything was ok. I think the author did a great job making me really feel the city, and I was pretty invested in the characters. I really liked the kind of vibes the author decided to go for, it worked for me really well.

I think it could have benefitted from being a bit longer to really dive into the world and how everything works. I’d say the “twist” of who was behind the mysterious player deaths was a very weak to be honest.
