This story is about a woman Camille who returns to her hometown to investigate the murder of 2 girls that occurred in the town. Camille not only has to deal with her mother who cares more about appearance and attention then her own kids but also is getting to know her younger sister Amma who she doesn't know, she also has to relive her disturbing childhood involving the death of her younger sister Marion, promiscuity and a unloving, lying and manipulative mother. The story is interesting, it looks into MBP and how it affects the children involved mentally. It deals with mentally and physically abusive parents while also giving you a look into the mentality of wanting to please people and belong, wanting to be loved by someone incapable of love.
I understand the story isn't supposed to be comfortable and most of it I was fine reading I just didn't really care for the descriptions of young girls bodies, talking about how big their boobs are, the calling young girls sexy and hot and the many naked scenes with her younger sister was just a little weird to read. The random romance with the cop sorta seemed unnecessary and the ending was a little predictable. I feel like Adora should've been in the story more, it should've been more actual interactions with the mom and sister and less getting wasted in bars and just talking to random townspeople in my opinion. Not the worst but not as good as I thought it would be.

I loved this. Even though I had already seen the television version before reading this, I was still on the edge of my seat. Flynn has a talent for crafting a compelling narrator and pacing her a vivid location with other colorful characters. Amma is an intriguing mystery as is Marian and Adora. The Crellin clan is a mess of simultaneously dangerous and weeping women and girls. Only thing I wanted was more exploration of the mental state of Amma. Adora we can mostly figure out through what Adora tells Camille and the Münchausen syndrome by proxy she has, but Amma is still a mystery. However, I also can see the merit of letting the reader draw her own conclusions.

I guess it was interesting and I was surprised in the end, but it was just really gross and not for me. I found some of it a bit excessive with description of gross or sexual things. I understand part of it is there to give us context on why our MC is the way she is, but the amount a lot felt unnecessary.
