better than the previous installment! although the will-they won't-they robin/strike dynamic is getting a bit played out.
I really, really enjoyed this read. Very satisfying murder mystery, and I think by far the best of this series. I have enjoyed the previous two books, but I thought the narrative was more coherent in this one, and the development of the two main characters was so much fun to read about. Quite gruesome subject matter, so if you are not a fan of stories that include violent serial murders, maybe avoid this one, but I sometimes like being scared by creepy books, and the description of the murders wasn't more graphic than something from an episode of "Bones", "Medium" or other similar crime drama, so it didn't bother me too much. I also was very interested in the way the perspective of the killer became a part of the drama - it added to the puzzle-solving aspect of the mystery, and that was great, even though the killer's head was a scary, awful place to spend time. All in all, I thought the writing was as great as I expected, and I was very happy with this addition to this series, and will definitely read more if there are more coming.
Probably 2.5 stars, since I'm still interested in the characters, but I liked this less than the others. It had lots of Criminal Minds-type scenes from the perspective of the serial killer that basically were all EVIL EVIL EVIL and it was a little much to take for someone who hates those shows and usually sticks to lighter mysteries.
I enjoyed this much more the second time around. Now I'm ready to read the latest one in the series!
Career of Evil is the 3rd in Robert Galbraith’s Strike series and it is hugely enjoyable.
Strike and Robin have enjoyed 2 huge case successes but life in their detective agency has returned to spying on potentially errant spouses. That is until Robin receives a parcel at work which isn’t the disposable cameras for her forthcoming wedding that she was expecting, but is a body part. As it becomes increasingly clear that Robin is being targeted, Strike hurriedly combs his backstory to determine who of those he has crossed during his career may be responsible.
The crime component of this series is good but not outstanding. However, I adore the Strike and Robin characters and relationship, angling with the wider turbulence in their respective personal lives. I really enjoyed this book, which I listened to narrated by the excellent Robert Glennister.
