I enjoy fantasy stories and ones about witches come in a close second after vampires. The synopsis of The Orphan Witch sounded intriguing. Persephone May bouncing around foster care because strange and unexpected things happen to her. Now an adult, when strange things happen, she just picks up and moves. Then she receives an email from an old acquaintance to come to Wile Isle. Once there she discovers that she is actually a witch.

This book has a few things I like about magical books – found family, a love interest and a curse to break. I did have a hard time getting through the story. I was hoping for a little more action. The pacing was slow and at times the plot was confusing. I’d recommend this for fantasy readers that enjoy a character driven story.

Thank you to NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a Persephone retelling(probably Hades as well, but it's not as obvious) that felt a bit like a mash up of Practical Magic(movie), Charmed(original version) and a dash of The Craft(movie) for about the first half before it went along it's own way.
Persephone has always been alone, foster home to foster home to group home till she ages out, now she moves about every 6 months, give or take a few, whenever she causes something weird to happen.
This last episode was a doozy though, 2 people tried to kill themselves and then she knocked out an entire coffee shop full of people. When she runs this time she runs to the only friend she's ever managed to make in her 30ish yrs. She finds out she's a witch and all sorts of shenanigans ensue.
The editing was a bit weak for me(could use another round, and likely has had as this is an ARC copy) but the story itself was interesting, it takes place across 3 different worlds, and it was nice to see a Hades/Persephone retelling that wasn't 100% predictable, probably because the Hades character wasn't really a focus, this was all about the women and finding love and family.

I received this ARC through NetGalley and St. Martin's Press

I enjoyed the characters and the storyline, but it was kind of a mess for me. It jumped around with all kinds of magic stuff that made it hard to follow.

I was between 3 and 4 stars for this one. For some reason, it just didn't pull me in nor hold my interest but I did like the concept.

Persephone has been alone; thinking she was abandoned. And realizing that she has powers that she has no control over-that have caused many accidents.
Her friend invites her to Wile Isle where she discovers many things about herself, her power, and her family.

This one just wasn't for me. Too much telling rather than letting me discover. I struggled through the first 3 chapters and then, from there, just never connected. I found the magic intriguing but I just genuinely stopped caring enough to even try to understand it. I wish I'd loved this more.

A huge thank you to the author and St. Martin's Griffin for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
