Read as part of volunteer book screening. I don’t think I’ve ever read a memoir written by someone still so young, but this was such an honest look at the author’s life experience so far. Super valuable information for youth exploring their identity and for people who want to understand and support others.

This book is a masterclass on how to write a memoir for a younger audience. It’s engaging and uses the language that they will understand in order to get them into the subject matter. George Michael Johnson takes you through the points of his life which made him who he is. He shows us that race and gender will always mix to make you a special person and that you cannot talk about one without the other. They always mix. This book does deal with some heavy topics including what we might call sexual assault or rape and his fears about hazing which has a long history in this country. These are not reasons for young people to not pick up this book. Nothing is glamorized about it, in fact Johnson takes special precaution to do these topics justice. As a book, this is one of the more realistic books on coming out and being gay in America.

This beautifully written book definitely comes with many content warnings for various types of SA, grooming, and trauma.

I listened to the audiobook, lovingly narrated by the author. It’s such a gritty, raw, honest story about a queer youth finding himself, and I enjoyed every minute of it - even though some bits were tough to get through due to being quite triggering. It’s an important story that needs to be shared.

This is a really beautiful book. George Johnson really digs deep into their life and experiences, and the end result is deeply moving. They do a great job explaining how their experiences are shaped by both their Blackness and their queerness. I am grateful for their vulnerability in sharing so much of their life. I definitely recommend this one.
