Decided to venture back to Pirate's Cove, and was not disappointed, though I did had to flip through book one again to refresh myself on the plot and the cast of character's out and about in Pirate's Cove.

The story begins weeks after the incident in book one, and things are somewhat back to normal, but not quite. It wasted no time in moving the story forward, with just few callbacks to the first one. It kinda starts off slow and but still had a steady pacing, and when the mystery begins, the pacing picked up notches, and I had a hard time putting it down then.

Kudos to the writing and the mystery aspect in this, though my only lament is that the mystery part was not as compelling as in the first, though I enjoyed that it was totally unpredicatable, with several suspects which kept me guessing until the end, when who the killer was was finally revealed.

I also like the 'are they, aren't they' with regards to Jack's and Ellery's romance, and it was pretty refreshing that it was not all a bed of roses and that there is room to see where we go from here on out.

Overall, still a nice and cozy mystery read with many elements in it's favour, and Pirate's Cove is definitely a worthwhile place to revisit again time and again. Maybe even sooner since I'm kinda on a mystery kick right now.

Ellery's ex unexpectedly shows up in Pirate's Cove to research for his next novel. As he digs up dangerous town secrets, he becomes a victim himself. Ellery, once again having to prove his innocence, stumbles into a tragic secret past that puts him directly in the path of the killer.

Ellery is just out here trying to do his best and be a good person. Honestly if I was Ellery I would be so offended that all these people think I committed murder, twice! I understand where Jack is coming from, but I don't know. He seemed to be very hot and cold towards Ellery and I just want him to be nice because Ellery is such a sweetheart. They had a slight glimmer of hope for their budding romance, but it definitely is on a bit of a pause right now. I'm hoping we see them - Jack - work through their hang-ups and be all cutesy together soon.

I didn't love how Nora kept pushing Ellery into solve the case, nosy old ladies aren't my cup of tea. But I do like the small town vibes and cast of characters, it definitely keeps it interesting. The mystery was pretty good! Not as suspenseful as the last book but all the secrets were pretty intriguing. By the end I could tell who the killer was but if you told me at the beginning I wouldn't have believed it.

Another easy and interesting listen. These are the perfect books for my audiobook mood right now and I'm really enjoying them. I'm a big cozy mystery fan and these are the epitome of that genre. Who knows what's going to happen next in this small town, but I'm hoping we get some more of Ellery and Jack!

Another cozy mystery, similar to the first in the series, again with the glacially slow burn romance.

I'm not really sure how many times Ellery can be a "perfect suspect" before his romance between himself and the police chief can completely die...

If you enjoyed book 1, this is more of the same. (I am a bit concerned with how few people are in the small town if we're doomed to see all of them become murderers...)

i really don’t get the jack and jake comparisons. jack is actually pleasant outside of his hang ups which are valid hang ups.
losing a kid and a wife is a very legit reason to worry about trying again imo. ellery was wrong for pushing for friendship though when he clearly wants more.
does jack need to work on his communication? yes but is he going get violent like jake? no i don’t think so. god i hope not!

as entertaining as this was i’m going to get bored if ellery keeps being the main suspect. also ellerys lack of emotion regarding his ex being murdered was bizarre. he wasn’t even that rattled. i don’t know why the author didn’t give him some emotion in that regard. i just read holmes series by the same author and the character there was rattled by someone dying that he met a day ago which is reasonable reaction for most ppl. here ellery came off cold and unfeeling which seemed out character tbh.

the mystery was good. i had no idea who it was. actually thats true for both book one and this. everyone in town is so nice that it skews my perspective.

on to the next
