Social media is all over the new movie adaptation of this book. Inwanted to see how the book differed from the movie. There are some significant differences, and I've seen mixed reviews about it (and about the movie), but I thought it was a very good book. It was very suspenseful, and the open ending was frustrating but in a good way. The entire story takes place over a compressed timeline so there's a lot of detail about the evolution of people's reactions and emotions to what happens around them. I found that very realistic. Overall, a good book.

I detest this book. I can honestly say the movie was actually better except I hated the ended.
Why was this book so sexualized and crude? I don't understand why certain things were described how they were and I could have went without the teenage boy scene IYKYK.
I can't say I liked this book very much, alot of nothing happened and I don't even know what you'd call this.
Nothing was really explained either. At least the movie tried.
No, it may have been good for other people but this just wasn't for me. Wouldn't recommend.

A dark and mysterious dystopian. It was interesting for there still to be plot questions at the end, it’s unclear to me what has actually happened in the world but the reactions and behaviours of the characters seem very real.

Interesting perspectives were also offered on parenthood and I was reminded of the sentiment that as a child/teenager it’s so important to remember that your parents are being parents for the first time too.

It was interesting to understand how different characters coped with stress and how mistrust arises in the face of unknowns. Interesting read for current era.

Negative points cause it felt like female characters were too obviously written by a male author, leaning too much on female stereotypes.

Summary: Leave the World Behind is an introspective musing on the sudden and unannounced end of society as we know it. Alam details the thoughts, reactions, and experiences of two families as they learn to grapple with their new reality and struggle to find trust in one another during times of uncertainty. Capitalizing on the innate human fear of "the unknown", Alam highlights how prolonged uncertainty and isolation can breed bias, mistrust, and contention.

Review: All told, Leave the World Behind is a solid literary fiction novel, but nothing to write home about. This is a character-driven novel, focusing more on how the characters respond, feel, and react to the "end of the world" as opposed to focusing on what actually happened to cause the end of the world or descriptions of what this new reality looks like. While Alam's ability to build complex and sympathetic characters is an impressive feat, I wish there was more time dedicated to explaining what exactly is going on in the world. However, Alam's theme of uncertainty carries throughout the entire novel all the way to the end, which was a bit unsatisfying for me.
