I had always heard of Piers Anthony but never sat down to enjoy one of his stories. I'm glad a did. This one was recommended to me by a co-worker after I mentioned that I was writing a book about Death. When you say that and someone recommends a book that already exists, there is always a sense of dread that the book you're writing has already been written. I'm happy to say that our stories are very different.
I thoroughly enjoyed On a Pale Horse and have become an instant fan of Piers Anthony. I look forward to reading more of his work. 4/5

This is seriously one of the best fantasy / sci-fi books out there. I read it so many years ago but I love to re-read it every once in a while. Engaging, entertaining yet thought provoking. And once you read this one, the rest of the books in the series are a must...

I originally read it when I was 14, and thought it was such a cool concept with really great world building. Upon rereading it this year, a lot of the magic in the book kind of faded for me. It is a very bingeable book, though there is an element of women being no more than tools for men to accomplish their own goals. I was also not a huge fan of how prominent the God vs Satan aspect was; it felt a little tacked on in a world where men become Death, Fate, Time, etc. The Incarnations themselves, and the roles they take on are super incredible, as well as the general feeling of the world they inhabit; it's dirty and grungy and you can practically feel the air. I love the concept, I just wish a different author wrote it in a more contemporary setting.

I loved reading this book. My dad recommended it when we found it in a box with tons of his old books. It is the first Piers Anthony book I've read. It was amazing. I loved the whole concept. A guy shooting death, meeting the love of his life, and saving her from an evil plot by Satan himself, what could be better?
