This was alright for my one-in-a-while dive into murder mysteries that are more mystery than anything else. Not a reread but I would pick up the sequel in the future!
This book wasn’t bad. I actually enjoyed Molly’s character and viewpoints. I guess I was just disappointed because there wasn’t as much mystery or depth to the story. The one small twist in the end wasn’t even that mind blowing. I read it pretty quickly, but wasn’t dying to keep reading.

I had seen many great reviews of this book but was pretty disappointed. Molly is clearly on the spectrum and her character felt like a caricature of someone with autism. The way that all the other characters interacted with her made me really uncomfortable for the most part. I finished it because I wanted to see how the case resolved but I have no need to read the rest of the series.
Easy read but still an intriguing and entertaining storyline.
Unfortunately, the best character in this book is dead.
Gran, I sure could have used some of your if-life-gives-you-lemons-esque phrases to steer me in the right direction when I began dark thoughts of aggressively ripping the cover in half after having to read several pages in which Molly rudely (and soooo slowwwwwly ohfortheloveofgod) chews a muffin during an interrogation.
This was readable and sometimes a little cute and sometimes a little quirky and that would have been just fine and dandy except that there are a lot of tough/touchy topics in this book like domestic abuse and immigration and grief and and others I'm probably forgetting and none of them were handled in a sensitive or effective or heartfelt way.
We are supposed to believe that there was growth with Molly, who has characteristics that sound a bit on the spectrum or, if we are to believe that was not what was intended, characteristics of someone socially inept, extremely polite yet unable to read facial expressions and social cues, and aloof at all the right (or rather, wrong) moments. These characteristics are practically shoved down our throats in the first few chapters through words - not even necessarily through her actions, as if we'd be too daft to spot them on our own. We MUST know, IMMEDIATELY, that Molly is not like a regular person. However, gaining a few friends and getting some smooches and a by the end of the book does not prove to me that she has had any real growth that I cared about because I didn't particularly care about her. Her voice was far too similar to characters in other books that really nailed it (Eleanor Oliphant ([b:Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine|31434883|Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine|Gail Honeyman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1493724347l/31434883._SY75_.jpg|47327681]), Don Tillman ([b:The Rosie Project|16181775|The Rosie Project (Don Tillman, #1)|Graeme Simsion|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1371651741l/16181775._SY75_.jpg|22084678]), Fern Castle ([b:The Good Sister|53137974|The Good Sister|Sally Hepworth|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1611556027l/53137974._SY75_.jpg|79888450]), and even a little bit like Britt-Marie's mannerisms ([b:Britt-Marie Was Here|27406704|Britt-Marie Was Here|Fredrik Backman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1460442061l/27406704._SY75_.jpg|41818210]).
This was mostly enjoyable, entirely unbelievable, and ultimately a true middle-of-the-road experience for me. I won't be picking up the sequel, as I don't feel like the story needs one. The end was sufficient and didn't leave enough hanging for me to crave more. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it, however. I was getting a serious case of FOMO (that's Fear of Missing Out, Molly).
