Just as chilling as when I read it in 6th grade…now with illustrations!
This really pulled me in and kept me engaged the whole time, even though I thought this was pretty much just another retelling of the same story and wouldn't be much. It moved fast. By the end, maybe a little too fast? I think I wanted it to be drawn out a little bit more--actually, under the right direction, I think this could make a good on-going series. But, I'm getting away with myself.
I thought this was very enjoyable and "clean"--no nonsense, everything that was included was important. Nice job of not wasting time and space and knowing what's important.
And the ending..........how is it that I've read this book and seen the movie and.......just now saw the ending in a whole new way?

This book was a beautiful retelling of the children's classic The Giver. It's been many years since I last read this book in grade school, but I remember this tale being impactful at the time. It was no less so as an adult and feels especially relevant these days.
The story has been summarized many times so I won't retread that ground. I will just say I feel like this story is one for the ages. It is a warning for society. Differences, although sometimes difficult, are something to be celebrated. When we sacrifice everything for safety, we create a gray world with no light or love.
The graphic novel medium was a great re-telling of this book. The illustrations really bring the story to life with the best part being how the illustrator slowly added in color as Jonas began seeing them.
I highly recommend this version of The Giver. I also am now inspired to read more classics in graphic novel form. It's such a unique way to tell a story and I'm glad it's gaining in popularity.

This is my favorite book from when I was a kid. I re-read it recently and it hits different as a parent/adult!
This graphic adaptation of Jonas’ colorless world makes this story even more horrifying and electric. Very well done!

I want to read of Lois Lowry's The Giver series so instead of rereading the original again I picked this one and enjoyed it. Only had issues with some of the lettering.
Quick read for a "feeling crummy, gotta stay in bed" day, and a great review of a wonderful book. There were so many details that I had forgotten since reading this book in middle school, and revisiting it in a new format was very fun as well. There is a short Q&A at the end with Lois Lowry and Craig Russell both giving insight on what the story and the graphic novel presentation meant to them that was insightful and pleasant.
