Very slavish to the real story it was inspired from. I didn't mind. What is interesting with the notion of using a true crime as a basis is to try to weave a story that actually make sense, to explain a case that is hard to understand (true crimes "fascinate" because they are hard to make sense of). I'm not sure I was convinced by her take on the story, the sexualisation of it seemed very forced (trying to make as if blow jobs are a "normal" rite of passage for 12 years olds is an incredible stretch. Hu-hu, no). More than anything, it was quite lackluster for a story that is anything but.
The ending pages actually made me angry. It was only there for shocking value, was not believable, was psychophobic and was undoing all the attempts at subtlety of the rest of the book. What's the point of trying to not have a caricatural black and white take at a horrible crime, to end the story with a gross caricature ?

i can’t say i enjoyed this book, but i also didn’t hate it. i find it insensitive to the victims of the slenderman killing, the way a lot of this ends up portraying mental health. i felt as if this could’ve been an interesting insight into the mind of a mentally ill girl making a horrific decision but you don’t really get that. i’m very conflicted about my thoughts with this.

I chose this book as part of Amazon First Reads and I have quite enjoyed it.
I’ll be honest, I haven’t actually heard of the Slender Man killing, so I didn’t realise this book is basically a fictionalised replica of that crime, until I read other reviews after finishing the book. Because I wasn’t comparing this book to the real life events though, because I wasn’t aware of it, this made the book really intriguing and addictive to me. Right from the start, I was hooked on Maddie and Lana’s toxic relationship. I enjoy the different POV’s and timelines and there were a few twists throughout that I didn’t see coming. Especially the ending!
I do think the plot was a bit loose in places, and I would have liked to have heard more from Lana and Sage’s POV’s, but in all, this book was easy to read and had me hooked, so I think it’s worthy of 4 stars.

It have to say, it had me hooked but the kinda gross there was no reference to the original crime, and it doesn’t feel different enough not to. Also, the ending tried to be twisty & shocking but honestly was kinda a let down
