Worth it in the end
It got really slow in the middle, I almost didn't pick it up again, but the conclusion is worth it

One of the best books I've read this year! I knew I was going to love this book because it's by Blake Crouch, my favorite author, but in the first hundred pages or so it was really slow and confusing (I don't know if it's because I was tired and my brain was slow or the writing) but as soon as I understood what's going on I just couldn't put it down, and I'm glad I didn't DNF it because it was AMAZING.
If you read Blake Crouch Wayward Pines series you k ow how well this author does to keep you furiously turning the pages. What he does in Abandon is toggle is between the past in the mining town of Abandon in the 1800s and then current day. Both stories run side by side explaining the search for missing gold in the treacherous mountains surrounding the town and high cost of greed!!!
It’s exciting, violently graphic, thrilling along with allowing you to become attached tragic characters quite quickly and caring for all involved in both stories then and now. I e read a few of his books now and this author never disappoints.

Thank God that is over!!!!! omg!! It took me forever to finish that book! so many unneccesary details and fluff. By the end I was just skimming the pages thinking "ok ok get on with it already" sheesh!

I found this book to be really interesting. I liked how it switched between the two different time periods and story lines. I felt like it could have had a bit more dynamic ending, but it was a good read.
A few things bug me about this book:
1) We didn’t get a reason to care about any of the characters until about the 50% mark when Crouch started giving some backstory and life to all these names.
2) It was too long for the genre. Some characters were unneeded and whole chapters could be cut and because of this the pacing was a bit jerk-y.
3) It had the potential to be UH MAZING, but fell way short. It needed a ton of editing, and by a ton I mean you probably could cut out 100 pages of this book and that’s no exaggeration.
Overall, this book had all the elements to be great, but when assembled it was a bit clunky and long.

Christmas Eve. A whole village disappears. 120 years later some people return to Abandon to find out what happened but they are not alone.
I thought the premise was really good. I was immediately interested to find out what happened to the village (and even more so how a complete village can disappear without a trace or a hint of what happened). Told in alternating timelines, switching between 1893 and now, some parts of the story were far more interesting than others. Weirdly enough, I'm tempted to call the middle part the most interesting, as I thought the beginning was quite slow.
The book felt like it was too long for the story it told. Near the end it started to get a bit repetitive (just how many bad guys and everything are there). However, it did entertain me, at least up until the very end where I thought the story got a bit out of hand. Overall, some mixed feelings although I still think Abandon's mystery was an interesting one.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
