This was okay; not what I was expecting. The disappearance of the entire town was a mystery neatly solved, and I was happy that all the loose ends were tied up. I was not left hanging, wondering what happened. I know it's probably just me, but I was expecting a less-logical explanation.
Blake Crouch has done it again. I was once more very pissed off at the ending. I was sad the ending didn't go the way I thought it should but that doesn't mean it was bad :)

I always enjoy a Blake Crouch novel, this one no exception. I enjoyed getting to know the numerous characters and their backgrounds and loved how the author wove together the duel timelines. Many times I cut a star off due to a poor ending but in this case I added a star thanks to the last quarter.
There were 2 reasons why it didn't get a 5* rating. I felt the story needed cut back a bit as it dragged in the late beginning/middle.
A major reason it was docked a point was the amount of words that I had to look up. Don't get me wrong, I love learning new words, but when I constantly need to pull up the definition, wiki or translate, sometimes every other paragraph, it gets old and takes away from the flow and overall enjoyment of the story. Now, I do not believe I am dumb. I have degrees in 2 different fields and am more outdoorsy than most other females I know so you'd think I'd be ok reading a mountain adventure fiction novel. Do you know what gorp is? (Trail Mix) Serape? (Shawl in Spanish) Amalgamation? (The action, process, or result of combining or uniting- he was talking about a lollipop

Got misled again with the blurb suggesting ghost story, and some inconsistencies as to how the priest's body and the mule skinner's body were never discovered, but on the whole a good mystery. The language was bit off for me maybe more so coz of 2 time frames. I skipped a lot of description about the snow capped mountains coz i felt it was going on and on, else it was a thrill ride.
The story was okay. The narration flips back and forth between the 1900's and modern time. I have never been been a huge fan of that type of storytelling because I have trouble keeping everyone, and everything, straight. lol.
The concept of this book and the telling of the story weren't bad but it just did not stop, one bad thing after another in both timelines. Almost everyone was greedy and willing to do horrible things to other people to get what they wanted and it became tiring quite fast.

After reading both Dark Matter and Recursion I had decided to look for more and found this one. (Both of those named above are critical hits, but if you haven’t read yet, please do…they’re great). Abandon is an older release, so I don’t think nearly as many have heard of it. It’s also historical fiction and not scifi, so that may throw some people off. The story itself is about an abandoned mining town where everyone disappeared on the same Christmas Day—no bodies or remains of any kind, no preparation of any kind either, so the people didn’t plan to leave. That premise alone drew me in. I’ll be honest I typically like historical fiction to be about a specific real event, even if the events in the book are totally fabricated, but this one held up pretty well. (If I am wrong and this is a true story(ish) let me know! I tried looking it up…). The only thing that threw me off while listening to this one is that goodreads has this book tagged as #Paranormal and although it’s a spooky premise, there is absolutely nothing paranormal about it (except for maybe one single line I recall, but will not spoil!). This is a story of survival and greed, it does read more like an action-y story than a horror, but it is definitely graphic. Personally a 4/5* for me.
The second part is an accompanying short story that the audible credit included. So, August, 2021. On the Good, Red Road by Blake Crouch (read by Blake Crouch!). This short story highlights one characters road to Abandon and it’s another story of survival… and something a little darker. Personally a 3.5/5*, a good accompanying story.
Have you read any Blake Crouch? Or seen anything adapted from his work? (Wayward Pines and Good Behavior…and soon to be Dark Matter too!)
