A young female scientist explores the fascinating world of volcanology. She starts in Hawaii and moves into new realms- taking us along on her adventure as a field volcanologist. I will never again view Discovery Channel shows quite the same. I loved experiencing her growth in this fascinating career
After a week, I'm finally adding this to the DNF shelf. I really wanted to like it, and it ticks so many of my interest boxes...but for reasons I can't pinpoint, it just wasn't working for me.
I loved this book. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publishers for an opportunity to read this! I first learned about Jess Phoenix and what a volcanologist was on the podcast Ologies. It was a fascinating episode and I immediately started following Jess on social media. Her life is certainly one of adventure and I learned through this book just how interesting and difficult her job is.
I absolutely loved hearing about some of the places she visited and although I am not even remotely interested in geology, this book was SO good. The science behind her decisions was easily understood in the way that she describes it and it felt like hearing about some intense trips from a good friend. It's clear that she takes her job seriously, cares for the planet and is an all around badass. I specifically love that she's a woman doing a job that is considered a man's. I relate to that on a professional level as well, along with her fighting through the pain of injuries to get the job done.
I would highly recommend that you read this book of you want to learn some amazing facts about something I think the average person knows very little about- volcanoes- but hear it from someone who has got to be one of the coolest, down to earth individuals ever. This book was epic.

Quick superficial read. Felt more like a series of short stories about travel rather than a personal narrative. I didn't get the type of introspection I read memoirs for. Prose felt very cold. Included lots of details that didn't really help with understanding the story while leaving some stuff out. Like what happened after the many times she got injured? I wish the book had photos of the places and phenomena described in the book.
Graphic: Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Ableism, Death

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author takes us with her journeys around the world as she explores volcanoes. The book combines science, memoir and travel adventure. I really enjoyed the armchair travels and parts of the book made me laugh out loud. The book is easy to read and fun and I found the science interesting. Enjoy

I love reading about things I know nothing about and I enjoyed this book from Jess Phoenix (who I follow on Twitter) but something was missing here but I'm not quite sure what. Did I want a little more science? Maybe Did I just want more photos? Maybe?
I mean there were encounters with bad guys, lava flows, eruptions, wacky stunts done for crazy TV people, a visit to The Explorer's Club to name a few so I'm not sure what I needed. I think part of her message is science is important but it also involves a lot of boring minutia and hours and hours of data analysis and it's NOT all exploding lava bombs.
So anyway, it's good and quite interesting but I don't find myself gushing about it and trying to convince everybody to read it in the way I was hoping to feel after finishing.

Snapshots of a blossoming career in the Geology. Totally has a scientist’s level of detail and precision. My highest praise is that if I could visit with ten ladies at an Explorer’s Club function, I guarantee I could identify Jess.
