"Jehan, Jehan the end will be bad"
"The beginning at least will have been good."
Personally I enjoyed the animated movie that came out; despite the tragedy of the characters often I found the sentences long winded but lacking. The suffering that the characters go through for their affections felt a little washed out towards the end of the book, I wouldn't have minded a lighter ending one where Esmeralda lives with her mother and finds love, one where Jehan realizes the importance of his life, and one where the Hunchback finds solace (and the Archdeacon burns).

I've always said that this is one of those novels that you think you know...until you sit down to really read it. So much more than the film versions that have come to represent the work in the minds of most, Hugo's novel is really a passionate examination of human existance.
Make sure you get the best translation for your needs - I recommend the Signet edition. If you're planning a trip to Paris in the futre - definately pick up a copy.
PS - You'll never be able to stomach the Disney version once you meet the true Quasimodo and Esmerelda
