emotional sad slow-paced

Most. Depressing. Book. Ever.

EVERYONE dies.

Plus, an entire, long chapter describing the view of Paris from the top of the Notre Dame?

I appreciate reading historical fiction written also in history. And whether a result of translation or solely author’s intention, was continuously delighted by the chapter titles.

Re-read this one recently, I find Hugo's prose to be to turgid and emotional to be effective, but will readily admit that my own tastes are at fault here.

I unfortunately like the Disney movie better but that’s all down to the fact Esmeralda in this book dies a horrible death and the Romani community are written through lenses warped by the racism of the past.
