What a detailed book… made it a pretty slow read though. The second half was a lot faster.
The theme is basically that of the musical (not the Disney movie) just with a lot more details and plot lines. That being said, the story was much different than the musical and might be worth a read if you like lots of details and random interconnecting stories. The musical missed some of my favorite characters, Pierre Gringoire and Jehan Frollo (he’s more interesting in the book).
My big problem with the book… why write a book about a disabled character, but not include their perspective and write the smallest portion of the story actually about them??? I guess this was written 200ish years ago so… and the original title in French is “Notre Dame de Paris” so Quasimodo is actually referenced in the title. But that could easily translate to English and still be a fine title without “hunchback.”
