I enjoyed reading the book, but it was nothing special.

However, something that REALLY bothered me is that Baxter was writing about a veterinarian so you'd think she would know at least the basics about animals that she was trying to write about.
The main character Jess has a Blue and Gold Macaw who, at least twice in the story, stands on her finger. Anyone who knows anything about birds knows that Blue and Golds are rather large birds and there is no way it could stand on one finger.

Annoying protagonist, bad characterization, okay plot, and then she compares someone to "Miss Haversham" and I wondered why people try to use allusions they don't actually understand and I was filled with irritation.
