I feel the need to give 2 different ratings. 5* for the story, it really kept me hooked! All the drama around the sect rivalries and feuds, the mysteries, the suspense and all the plot twists! I bow to the author's ability to blend all these story plots, and to make them no less important than the central romance! Loved it. And I love pretty much all characters, good and evil, they own my heart.

Having said so... I can't bring myself to avoid mentioning that the NSFW chapters made me feel extremely uncomfortable, almost sick. I'm not gonna spoiler anything in order to explain my reasons, but if you're sensitive towards certain triggering topics, I can point out for you chapters to avoid. You wouldn't miss anything on the story itself, and you'd still be able to enjoy fully the romance!

I have no words for this book other than that it is pure perfection.

Slow burn have a special place in my heart and this was most certainly a slow burn. I read nearly 800 pages before something actually happened but I am not complaining because the tension was there the whole way though.

WWX deserves the world and so does LWJ they are the cutest I will not be convinced other wise.

If there I one book that I will forever recommend from this point forward it is this one.

3.5-4 stars. Can't decide.

Many thanks to the Exiled Rebel crews for fan-translating this story!

I've watched both "The Untamed" and "The Untamed Special Edition" TV series and LOVED it so much. Still, I couldn't get enough of Wangxian ❤, so I decided to read the novel.

First, kudos to the author for the worldbuilding, the story, and the complex characters. I haven't read too much Chinese fantasy, so I don't know if this kind of "cultivation" world with their magic and mysteries have been told many times or not, but for me this is new, and therefore refreshing. The main characters are lovable. Wei WuXian is of course very funny, especially in the scenes where he is paired with Lan Wangji. I especially enjoyed the bonus chapters that shows sweet moments between WWX & LWJ.

That said, I was surprised to find the fantasy element of the novel to be much more gruesome than the TV series. Also, the Yin iron, which is an important plot in the series, never appeared in the novel. Many characters such as Wen Qing and even Jiang Yanli only appeared fleetingly, while in the series they have such a sweet and deep relationship with WWX. There are also some plot holes in the novel (like the Xuanwu sword that first disappeared to the bottom of the lake, but WWX somehow managed to make the Tiger Seal from) that are patched up in the series. But... there are also more details in the novel that clarify things (like why WWX & LWJ kept running into the juniors), and like I said, the bonus scenes!!

I feel that the novel is a raw version that still needs much editing. I really appreciated the work that has been done by the screen writers. They successfully polished and elevated the raw diamond: making the plot more cohesive, the relationship between the characters deeper, and the story in general to be much more palatable and touching. So for those interested, I would recommend to first watch the TV series before reading the novel.

Wei WuXian is dead. But even death doesn't give him peace.

Hailed as the most powerful and renowned demonic cultivator, his spirit is called back by a particularly desperate Mo XuanYu, who sacrifices his body in exchange for revenge against the family that abuses him.

Different face, different name, but even so Wei WuXian is a genius and his talents slowly bring him to the spotlight of two people he would never want to meet again - his sworn brother Jiang Cheng who led the battle to kill him, and his old rival Lan WangJi who surprisingly doesn't resent him as much as he assumed.

I loved the entire mystery that tied this story together - the plot slowly picking up clues and piecing together a terrible truth. And as each small battle Wei WuXuian encounters, his talent and skill come into play, working seamlessly with that of his partner Lan WangJi.

Honestly, their slowly developing relationship was a wonder to read, and every flashback that helped flesh out WuXian's character and his relationships with his friends was brilliantly done.

Mostly, it was the wonder of reading such flawed and realistic characters, with strengths and weaknesses and traits that made them simply human - their choices and the consequences that follow, how picking between what is right and what is easy is not always simple - it just shows humanity at it's best.

And for that, I shall forever cherish this story.
