This book ruined me. When I had just begun it I wasn't expecting much, the translation wasn't the best, I expected some fan fiction-ish novel, and that I would read it purely so I could start the drama and to meet the world and the character. Little did I know that I would actually fall in love with the main characters (more than I expected), that there would be more interesting characters, good plot, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I didn't know I would encounter some amazing scenes and chapters, for example the Yi City chapter, or that I would love how the "villains" were so well thought out and so interesting to read about. I was completely sucked into this story that for the past few days I could barely do anything other than read, I had to finish it asap for my own mental state and sanity. And the last thing I will mention, and my favorite thing in the book is the two main characters, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. At the same time, they are both, the same and different from what I expected, their chemistry was undeniable and insanely good, they went through so many hardships together, they did so much for each other (both, consciously and unconsciously) and they really make one of the most outstanding couples I've read about so far. Now excuse me, I'm gonna go rest for about a few days, and then finally start The Untamed, so I can FINALLY stare at 王一博.

Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Patriarch, the Grandmaster od Demonic Cultivation, bringing out the feelings of dread to all who hear his name; Our little bubbly lazy evil son still keeping up with a trend where all necromancers MUST live in the dirty abandoned caves like dirty hobos that they are - and yet, still somehow manages to find himself a handsome, strong, accomplished and powerful husbando, from a prominent, respectable and strict family, that somehow has enough patience and love to deal with all of his bullshit <3

tw rape

wanted to love this as much as the show but the ending completely ruined it for me. she just said fuck these characters I’ve developed I’m just gonna have one essentially rape the other and it’s gonna be romantic. literally was soooo shocked at that happening because it was just so out of character. however the whole novel had this theme of dub con now that I’m thinking about it so maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised.

I had some other issues with the book. the prose wasn’t great. however I can’t judge too harshly because it’s a fan translation. there was also a lot of telling instead of showing and multiple info dumps.

the structuring of this novel was really confusing as well. if I didn’t already know the plot because of the show I would’ve been very very confused because she jumps around from past to present with no indications.

oh god. I almost forgot with how annoyed I was about the rape scene at the end. the author is blatantly misogynistic in this novel and all the female characters get so few scenes. which makes no sense because they’re all really important to the main characters arc???? anyways the most ridiculous scene was when one female character was so weak she gets exhausted from throwing.....two flowers. she literally almost falls over from exhaustion from throwing two flowers lmao.

however this book was still very enthralling and I had a difficult time putting it down. the world building was amazing. the characters were really great when they weren’t randomly OOC. there was some good humor and I laughed out loud a couple times. some cute scenes between the two MCs. there was good potential.

essentially, I’d highly recommend the show but would probably skip this.
