"His fear was gone; his bearing was firm. He was in command of the situation with an ease born of usage."

For every A New Hope, there must be an Empire Strikes Back. Foundation and Empire is possibly the greatest sequel book I have ever read by introducing possibly the greatest villain character in literature - The Mule.

It takes the wonderfully complex and interesting world set up by the First foundation novel and introduces fresh new life into this series through it's introduction of deeply calculating and powerful antagonists. Instead of following the heroic exploits of highly comptent protagonists in their quest to protect the Foundation, we are shown protagonists who are in increasing states of despair trying incresingly desperate acts to protect their homeland.

And...holy shit...that ending. Masterful writing. The last chapter of this book might be my new favorite chapter ever written.

This series is not for everyone, it's complex and has aged quite a bit but you are missing out on an insane plot twist if you pass this up.
