“I will whisper on the water that one must never fear the raised shield, the reflection caught in an office window, or the mirror in a bathroom.”

I loved this book. I’ve only recently been getting into Greek mythology and have been intrigued by Medusa and her story. But the poems and stories written by men have painted her as a monster and that never sat well with me. She was misunderstood - she was a girl, a Gorgon, a sister. I think she would be pleased to know that her story, her myth, has outlived all the men who wrote her as a monster.

This was a great read about finding strength, beauty and power within yourself. We only ever heard Perseus’ side of this myth - he got top billing for so long. It’s refreshing to read a different POV. To finally, after centuries, have Medusa find a home as a powerful icon.

I honestly loved this. The tale/story didn't change so much that we never really heard Medusa's telling of it herself. I felt for Medusa. In mythology, humans were most of the time "playthings" of the gods and they really had no "choice" in the matter. Medusa's choice was to either die or say yes to Poseidon. It was eye-opening to actually see her growing up into this story and just being happy with who she is and what hand the gods had given her.

It read like a bad fanfiction that I might have written as a year 9 English project. The illustrations might be beautiful- I wouldn't know, I read the unillustrated copy. But the tone was inconsistent and the plot unoriginal.

Older children's novel, not even YA. I can see the intended audience and it wasn't me :/
