Favorite quote: “Your magic is something rare and no doubt powerful. But it isn’t a poison… I know because it comes from you.”

I really enjoyed this book and so happy Crow Club picked it for a book club for April. The esthetic perfect. Being based in the prohibition era mixed with magic being outlawed what more could I ask for. It did have a slow start and look me a minute to get into it, but soon as I did I couldn’t put it down. A strong female lead is always the way to my heart. Three girls called the Nightbirds that secretly selling their magic through a kiss that passes their powered to the other individual for a short period of time. The three girls all coming from very different background. Matilde being raised apart of the upper houses in a more luxurious lifestyle. Whereas Saylor came from poverty dense areas being intertwined in gang type communities just to survive and became a nightbird to make a better life for herself. As for Asa she came across seas and only became a nightbird to help her family. The three girls are different from the previous nightbirds, but they don’t realize how different until their world and secrets start to fall apart. Where everything goes next actually was quite unpredictable. A few things I was not a huge fan of was how the POV change between the three girls. At first it was very confused every time it changed but I eventually got use to it. I was also not a huge fan of the ending.. seemed very unfinished even though this will be a series I think the end was a bit flat for me. Besides that it was a good book and definitely would recommend and can’t wait for the next one to come out!

20. léta minulého století, zakázaná magie, politické intrikaření, více romantických linek.. nezní to špatně, což?

This book is hella atmospheric. Love the 1920’s inspired setting and really enjoyed all the political machinations going on in this book. The magic and policing of magic, in combination with the girls from different classes gave this book plenty to discuss in terms of themes carried over into the real world.
Unfortunately the pacing wasn’t my favourite and I definitely found myself tuning in and out throughout the book. Some of the relationships between the characters also felt a bit forced to me too. BUT!!! Pining sapphics? Yes please, gimme more of that.
Anyways if it sounds intriguing to you defs pick it up, I think despite its issues I’m really glad I read it.
