I finished this book the other day and man was it a trip. I’m still not sure what it’s about but I was enthralled the entire time. This is the story of “the man” and his wife, “the woman”; their names are never given. They’ve traveled to a faraway place to adopt a child. However the town proves to be a strange and mysterious place where they encounter strange and mysterious characters and strange and mysterious things happen. Are you seeing a theme here? I won’t go into too much detail because this is definitely a book to approach blindly. It’s sure to leave you wondering and confused yet entranced. WTF happened?!

Un uomo e una donna (sempre chiamati così, personaggi anonimi in mezzo ad altri che spiccano per originalità) americani sbarcano in un paese nord europeo (Finlandia?) per adottare un bambino. Cameron è maestro nella descrizione delle minuzie, e in particolare qui abbina a questa abilità un sottile velo di inquietudine che attraversa l'intero romanzo e porta alla mente Carrere. Se amate Carrere e Cameron fatevi travolgere dalla neve e dalla notte dove tutto può accadere. PS per fortuna è un po' meno disperato dei romanzi di Carrere

What a strange, dreamy book. Cameron's skill with setting and dialogue made reading it such an enjoyable experience. Reviewing books like this is similar to trying to explain the strange dream you just woke from. It's not so much what happened as how very strange yet very real it all felt to you.

Perfect bleak winter setting. You'll either hate it or love it. I loved it.

Such a well written book that felt like describing a nightmare. I felt like my grip on reality, what was real, what was imagined, was like snow in my hands - there one moment and impossible to hold on to the next. I think the feeling of reading this will stay with me for a long time.

anche se una cosa è vuota, non significa che non abbia valore.

una coppia senza nome in viaggio verso una città circondata solo da neve, freddo e buio - sono alla ricerca di un nuovo inizio o loro stessi?
arrivano in un hotel dal nome impronunciabile - Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel - dove il tempo sembra essersi congelato, la coppia è diretta all'orfanotrofio per conoscere il bimbo che hanno deciso di adottare. la donna ha il cancro ed entrambi vogliono esaudire questo loro desiderio che gli è stato negato a causa della malattia. durante il loro soggiorno all'interno dell'hotel, alla ricerca di uno spiraglio di luce verso una nuova vita, faranno la conoscenza di vari personaggi eccentrici, dalle idee bizzarre. niente è come sembra, tutto muta, i pensieri, i comportamenti, perfino il modo di parlarsi, toccarsi e guardarsi. è tutto così surreale!
atmosfere cupe, gelide che riesci a percepire, personaggi inquietanti... fino alla fine si resta con il fiato sospeso.

avevo alte aspettative per questo libro e devo dire che le ha superate tutte.
Cose che succedono la notte è un romanzo assurdo, irreale, dopo i primi capitoli ho iniziato a pensare che fosse tutto un sogno - forse lo è? - un libro fatto di suspance, illusioni, misteri... geniale! è stata una lettura piacevolissima, la scrittura poi è scorrevole e anche i dialoghi seppur non siano segnati non mi hanno creato nessun disturbo. lo consiglio caldamente, puoi inoltrarti nella sua lettura con scetticismo ma poi ci resti intrappolat*.
