One of the best books that no one knows about. There are books that get all the press all the credit all the talk. Then there are books that you pick up on accident, there are boos that you put off reading because you don't think the cover is flashy enough. There are books that you read and have to tell the world about. This book is all of those things. I bought this on accident. I found the cover to be slightly off putting, I thought it was going to be a book that was all about engines or some sort of sensationalist historical fiction. I thought it was going to be boring.

Once I decided that I was going to read it I couldn't put it down. This book is wonderful, and has surprises through out. This book needs to be read. For Sixth grade on up a perfect trilogy filled with a sweetness that makes me sigh even now.

------------------------------------------------------
Beautiful, wonderful, and a world that I would love to find myself in. The rich don't take ocean liners they instead take airships to see the world. Matt Cruise is a ship's boy he waits table, cleans dishes and keeps watch. One night he sees a hot air balloon and the rescue of the old man inside leaves Matt wondering what the man meant when he asked him "Did you see them?"

A year later one of the richest passengers comes up to Matt and asks him about the man that he rescued. She is the man's granddaughter and has the drawings of the fantastic creatures that he had seen a year ago.

Pirates, creatures, dessert island, ship wreaks, and just an amazing writing style.

Beautiful

For ages 12 and up

Not as awful as some of the other YA I've read (ahem, Divergent & Maze Runner), but that doesn't mean this is good. The writing was good and I liked the main character, but the plot was just so....perfect. Full of happy coincidences that lead to our little 15 year old cabin boy saving the day.
SpoilerWhat are the chances that Kate's first airship voyage takes her to the very unknown, uncharted island her grandfather found? And the tree that Matt and Kate get chased into by snake just happends to have a cloud cat skeleton? And they happen upon the crippled cloud cat? And the island is the pirate's secret base? And the cloud cat follows them onto the ship and conveniently attacks the pirates?

This book is an awesome steampunk adventure read. If you enjoy Scott Westerfield's Leviathan, you will enjoy this one too.

I read this novel with my Grade 8 class and the majority of them really loved it and got into it. The language is quite challenging as a lot of the words are in formal British language. The characters are unique, the dialogue is realistic, the plot has a ton of action in it, plus there's some cute romance that goes on. I'm really glad that I chose to read this novel with my class, as it taught them about hope, friendship, determination, and life & death.
