Cheever's writing is great but it is made for shorter prose and the best parts of it tends to get lost in the length of a novel.
Witty but lost its way and meandered a bit at times. Some humourous characters and some who seemed to be peculiar just for the sake of it.

I enjoyed it enough that I will likely read his short stories, but I thought it was a bit uneven. Parts were hilarious but the entire thing tailed off. It faded in the stretch. Sort of a less caustic Sinclair Lewis.
Some great passages, but overall a boring and predictable story.

Every sentence is written to perfection and the book teems with incisive insights into American life. I’m in awe of John Cheever’s writing, but I do feel this one book is a little overegged. The ideas and takedowns come so thick and fast in startlingly original phrases that it gets exhausting. Still wonderful.
