Lisa Jewell is known for her thrillers, and I’ve read nine of her books so generally I enjoy her writing.  This novel is set in England and the main storyline centers on a young couple that goes missing when they are out for a date, leaving their infant at home with a grandmother.  The two timelines are the time of the disappearance and about a year later, as a woman who recently moved to the area begins to piece together the clues.  It’s a mysterious, slow build (416 pages) with an ending that explains any open questions.

I flew through this long book in two days so it’s fair to call it a ‘page-turner’; however, the characters weren’t very deep, and the story primarily relied on the mystery.  If that’s what you’re looking for, then I suspect you’ll enjoy this book.  Personally, I prefer a thriller that weaves in complex character development so this was just so-so for me.

This book could have benefitted from another round of editing, but was overall quite a gripping mystery.

Loved the first 80% of the book. It was surprising and more emotional than I thought. But the ending was a little weaker and dragged on a little too much. It was very satisfying, though.

My first 4 star review by Lisa. I haven’t really been wowed or entertained from any of her previous books. Yet with this audiobook, I was eager to listen to the whole story. It does have a lot of sexual content ( partners intertwining with one another and indecisive orientation. Almost a grooming feeling to it. ) There is moderate profanity.
I was not expecting the story to reveal itself the way it did. This was a creative storyline.
The ending was really fulfilling. Every character getting what was coming to them. Waiting on The Family Upstairs II to be released to give Jewell one last go.
