A quick read for prompt no. 22 of the 52 Book Club Challenge 2024 - “A plot similar to another book”. I hadn’t read this one of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales before - I picked it because my choice for prompt 23 (“The other book with the similar plot”) is one by Gregory Maguire that I’ve wanted to read for ages, based on this fairy tale. This certainly isn’t a modern retelling or translation of the original! It is written in very archaic language and the story itself is terribly old-fashioned. But it’s a lovely little tale of good triumphing over evil, hard work reaping just rewards, etc., and I enjoyed reading it - it was nice to read something a bit different.

This is a beautiful book. The illustrations are gorgeous, I remember being enchanted by the whimsical vibes of the illustrations and story as a child. It’s just as beautiful as I remember it being.

This was one of my favourite fairytales when I was little! The evil step-mother strikes again, but children turn out to be smarter and better than her :)
