A good read, it certainly sparked an interest in me to learn more about the history of the Ottoman Empire and Eastern Europe. The story was intriguing, well paced and didn't rely on page turners to keep some tension. I did have a few problems with some phrases and expressions that just didn't quite work. eg: 'it weighed a fortune' and that one of a character's physical features was having an ironic face at least twice, but overall it was an enjoyable read and an interesting perspective on the Dracrula history.

Hmmm. Mitä tästä nyt sanoisi. Luin kirjaa aluksi innolla, mutta viimeistään viimeiset n. 150 sivua latisti lukuinnon ihan kokonaan. Johtolankojen etsiminen piti otteessaan, mutta loppu lässähti kuin pannukakku ja kuulosti välillä ihan kornilta. Lopussa halusin vain saada kirjan päätökseen.

The Historian was one of the books I added when I signed up for goodreads TWELVE years ago. Its been on my 'to read' list since then. I did start it a few times over the years but I was intimidated by its length (just shy of 700 pages). Well, I started it this year on audio and I really enjoyed it but because it's so long, I ran out of time and it was automatically returned to the library.
So I settled in and read it in the paperback version (that I probably bought 11 years ago).
I am usually one who is ok with quitting books. Life is too short to read stuff that I'm not getting anything from. BUT- I was determined to finish this book. I wish I hadn't. It took a long time & it felt like a chore most of the time.. I skimmed a few chapters when it was just getting to be too much. Part of this book (THE MIDDLE 500 PAGES) felt like settling in with a super dry text book. I did enjoy the last 80 pages or so but if you have to slog through SO much to get there, that is just too much.
